Which Takes Longer, Traditional or Clear Braces?

For people who’ve grown up equating orthodontics with sharp metal braces, unsightly wires, and lip-splitting brackets, the advent of Invisalign® clear aligners may seem too good to be true. Could these new plastic trays really do the same work as traditional braces? After all, clear braces address most of the downsides of the traditional route. Metal braces are highly visible, even intrusive, while clear aligners are virtually invisible. The polymers in Invisalign trays are smooth and precise, so they don’t rub or cause discomfort. But which option takes longer?

At Mint Dental Care, we offer Invisalign because even with all these advantages, clear braces often work faster than traditional braces for similar conditions. Research that compared the two concluded that “patients treated with clear aligners had a statistically significant shorter treatment duration than with braces.” Dr. Hayder and his team are ready to help you decide if Invisalign is right for you.

The Invisalign® Process in Odessa, FL

Dr. Hayder performs a comprehensive examination to ensure that clear aligner technology fits your needs. Invisalign can treat many alignment issues, among them being:

  • Overbite
  • Underbite
  • Crossbite
  • Open bite
  • Crowding
  • Teeth gaps

The next step is using our Itero scanner to take digital teeth impressions to promote a tight fit. With these images, we create a treatment plan that tells you how long your particular case is, and we can digitally show you how the final results will look.

Then, we send your impression to an Invisalign lab so they can fabricate your aligner series. You wear aligners for 22 hours daily, removing them to eat, brush and floss. After about two weeks, you move on to your next set of aligners and continue until the series is complete. We monitor your progress throughout.

Is Invisalign More Comfortable Than Metal Braces?

Without a doubt, clear aligners are more comfortable than traditional braces. However, metal brackets and wires often irritate your cheeks, gums, and lips, and orthodontic adjustments may add soreness to your discomfort.

Invisalign, on the other hand, takes advantage of a unique blend of BPA-free plastics to create tight and smooth trays tailored to the shape of your individual teeth and gums.
